Walmart to Remove or Reduce 1,000+ Artificial Ingredients by 2027
Walmart is embarking on a significant reformulation plan, aiming to remove or reduce over 1,000 products containing artificial ingredients. The move, set to be completed by January 2027, primarily targets its Great Value brand, but will also affect Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and Bettergoods products.
The retail giant plans to eliminate a wide range of chemicals and compounds, including preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and food dyes. Some of the 11 artificial food dyes on Walmart's list are already banned, proposed to be banned, or haven't been used in years. The action is a response to growing consumer demand for fewer additives in food, as reported by Consumer Reports.
Walmart shoppers can expect to see reformulated food items in the coming months. New versions of Great Value cheese dips and Fruit Spins Cereal are among the initial changes. The company has planned 14 alternative substances to replace harmful chemicals in products, focusing on safer and more sustainable options. This includes items like cleaning agents, personal care products, and packaging materials. The federal government is also scrutinising artificial food dyes, with the FDA banning Red 3 from the nation's food supply in 2021.
Walmart's 14-month reformulation plan, set to conclude by January 2027, will significantly reduce or eliminate artificial ingredients from over 1,000 products.
