Valneva's shares are experiencing a significant surge.
In the heart of Europe, a resurgence of the Indiana fever has caused concern, particularly in Italy, where over 200 cases have been reported since late July 2025. This marks a significant increase since the last cases recorded in the country back in 2017.
The mosquito-borne disease, transmitted by the daytime-active Aedes albopictus, has been causing problems across the continent, with Italy being one of the most affected areas. The German Federal Foreign Office has recommended citizens in affected regions to protect themselves consistently from mosquito bites, especially during the day.
Valneva, a European vaccine developer, is benefiting from this news. The company's Ixchiq vaccine, a live vaccine licensed for people between the ages of 12 and 59, has seen a surge in demand. However, the vaccine's approval in the USA for Ixchiq was completely suspended, and it was even temporarily removed from the market in the EU for older people. Recently, it has been re-licensed for the age group mentioned.
Indiana fever is characterised by fever and joint pain, and there are currently only two approved vaccines for the disease in Europe: Vimkunya from Bavarian Nordic, suitable for people aged 12 and over, and Ixchiq from Valneva.
As the outbreak continues to spread, efforts are being made to control the mosquito population and to ensure the vaccines are distributed effectively. The European health authorities are working closely with affected countries to manage the situation and prevent further spread of the disease.
With the recent resurgence of Indiana fever in Italy, the importance of vaccination and mosquito protection measures cannot be overstated. It is essential that individuals in affected areas take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and help curb the spread of this disease.
