Researchers have discovered that focusing on green elements in urban environments can significantly reduce anxiety and boost feelings of well-being. Scientists have found that directing visual attention to natural elements, particularly trees, can greatly improve mental health in urban areas. This was determined by studying participants' eye movements, which showed that focusing on green elements was associated with reduced anxiety and increased feelings of restoration.
Conversely, paying attention to grey elements, such as concrete and metal, was linked to increased anxiety and decreased perceived restorativeness. This highlights the importance of integrating nature into urban design to mitigate the psychological stress linked to city living.
Cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, Hannover, Dessau-Roßlau, and Barcelona have recognised this need and implemented significant changes. Berlin is promoting biodiversity in its city planning, while Frankfurt, Hannover, and Dessau-Roßlau are returning wild areas to natural development. Barcelona, through its Nature Plan 2030, is encouraging natural processes, insect hotels, and urban wildlife to thrive.
