Transformed Opening Night Film at San Sebastián, '27 Nights', triggering amendments in Argentina's Mental Health Laws

The 73rd San Sebastian Film Festival kicked off on September 19 with the Argentine film '27 Nights' ('27 noches'), marking a significant moment in the country's cinema history. This Netflix original production, directed by Santiago Mitre, is a fact-based dramedy that carries a political dimension, reflecting the current dramatic political situation in Argentina.

'27 Nights' is the first production by Mitre and his shingle La Union de los Rios with Netflix. The film, based on the eponymous novel by Natalia Zito and inspired by a true story, follows Martha Hoffman, an eccentric and fabulously wealthy matriarch who is committed to a psychiatric clinic by her two daughters.

Principal photography for '27 Nights' took place in January and February of this year in Buenos Aires. The film's production came about despite predictions that few, if any Argentine movies would be produced due to the country's new right-wing administration.

The film's protagonist, Dr. Casares, portrayed by Daniel Hendler who also directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the film, is called in as an expert witness to determine whether this is a calculated attempt to seize control of their mother's fortune or if Martha is genuinely suffering from a form of dementia.

Mitre developed the script for '27 Nights' with a team of writers, including Martín Mauregui, Agustín Liendo, and Hendler. The film, which led to vital changes in Argentina's mental health laws, now bans the involuntary admission of people to such institutions.

Mitre's relationship with the San Sebastian Film Festival goes back years, with previous films such as 'Paulina,' 'Argentina, 1985,' and 'Blondi' being honoured there. Mitre and his team are deeply grateful to festival director José Luis Rebordinos and the entire programming team.

'27 Nights' won three prizes at the festival, where it is being opened. Mitre believes '27 Nights' turned out beautifully, with a focus on small moments, human connection, and emotional detail. Inflation has stabilized in Argentina, but Llambi-Campbell notes that this comes at the expense of a dismantled productive system.

The production company that worked with Santiago Mitre and Agustina Llambi-Campbell on the production of '27 Noches' is not explicitly named in the search results. However, Santiago Mitre is listed as a producer on '27 Noches' according to IMDb-related news.

Mitre, known for directing, co-writing, and co-producing the Oscar-nominated 'Argentina, 1985,' is one of the producers of '27 Nights.' The film is a testament to his dedication to telling compelling, socially relevant stories that resonate with worldwide audiences.
