Hospitals in Kentucky, including St. Elizabeth-Edgewood, have been recognized for their cancer care services in Newsweek's latest ranking.

Three hospitals in Kentucky, such as St. Elizabeth-Edgewood, have been recognized by Newsweek for their top-notch cancer care services.

In a recent report by Newsweek and research firm Statista, the top cancer care hospitals in the United States have been ranked, providing a valuable resource for those seeking the best possible care. The methodology used for the ranking involved a nationwide online survey of medical professionals and hospital managers, alongside publicly available hospital quality metrics, patient satisfaction scores, and patient-reported outcome measures implementation scores.

Leading the pack is the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which secured the number one spot. The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital's Markey Cancer Center in Lexington followed closely, ranking among the top 50 cancer centers nationwide. Another top performer is the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, which also made it to the elite top four.

The Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic-Rochester also found themselves in the top four, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence in cancer care. Baptist Health Lexington and St. Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital were ranked at 145 and 165, respectively.

The Markey Cancer Center, one of only 57 cancer centers in the country to earn the NCI's Comprehensive Cancer Center designation, was highlighted for its excellence in lung and breast cancer care. It has been a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center since 2013.

The report by the American Cancer Society's Cancer Facts & Figures 2025 estimates that over two million people in the United States will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year. This sobering statistic underscores the importance of having access to high-quality cancer care.

To ensure a minimum quality standard, hospitals with a one-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services were excluded from the ranking. Additionally, hospitals with a very small number of beds were not considered, focusing the rankings on more substantial facilities.

This blended approach ensures that the rankings reflect both the clinical reputation and the quality of patient care delivered by cancer hospitals across the U.S., providing patients and their families with a reliable guide to finding the best possible care.

  1. The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital's Markey Cancer Center, one of the top 50 cancer centers in the United States, is renowned for its excellence in lung and breast cancer care.
  2. Alongside the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the Cleveland Clinic, and the Mayo Clinic-Rochester, the Markey Cancer Center is one of the top performers in the field of medical-conditions like cancer, demonstrating a strong commitment to health and wellness.
  3. As the American Cancer Society's Cancer Facts & Figures 2025 estimate over two million cancer diagnoses in the United States this year, the importance of accessing high-quality cancer care, such as that provided by the ranked hospitals, becomes crucial in the fight against cancer.
