In the world of film, the adaptation of a beloved novella can be a daunting task. However, the team behind the recent release, Mothering Sunday, has managed to bring Graham Swift's poignant story to life on the silver screen with great success.

At the helm of this adaptation is Alice Birch, who skillfully translated the novel's emotional depth and narrative subtleties into a cinematic form that honours the original text while utilising the visual and structural strengths of film.

The story revolves around housemaid and foundling Jane Fairchild, portrayed by Odessa Young, who finds herself alone on Mother's Day in 1924. Jane spends quality time with her secret lover, Paul, played by Josh O'Connor, but events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane's life forever.

Birch's adaptation involved preserving the novella’s intimate and reflective tone, focusing on Jane's internal world and delicate emotional shifts. She also employed a time-fractured structure to encompass Jane's later life as an author and the woman she becomes.

The film's director, Eva Husson, felt an instant connection to the material when she read Birch's script. Husson, a trilingual nomad who has lived between France, the States, the UK, Spain, and Puerto Rico, brought her unique perspective to the project.

The production, which took place during the pandemic, was able to shoot due to its small, contained story and limited locations. The filmmakers, coming off the success of the achingly romantic Carol and known for developing original stories and literary adaptations, assembled a talented cast.

Colin Firth was cast as Mr Niven, and he connected with the compassionate and thoughtful nature of the script. Sọpẹ Dìrísù was cast as Donald, and he was surprised by the depth Alice Birch had created in the novella.

Jamie Ramsay, the director of photography, faced challenges in making every day of the shoot match the sun-drenched day described in the script, as the weather turned damp and drizzly. Despite these challenges, Ramsay was able to create stunning visuals that perfectly captured the period and social context.

Mothering Sunday made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, selected in the new section Premiere. The film has been praised for its beautiful cinematography, powerful performances, and thought-provoking themes of love, class, and loss.

Young connected with the story as it portrays a female creator overcoming class and education barriers to create. O'Connor, who was chosen for the role of Paul due to his performance in God's Own Country, was moved by the big emotions and questions of life that the story explores.

Producers Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley of Number 9 Films loved Graham Swift's novella and won the rights to adapt it. With Birch's adaptation, Husson's direction, and the talented cast and crew, Mothering Sunday is a must-see for any film lover.
