Deadly Homemade Chacha Poisoning in Sochi
At least 10 people have died in Sochi, Russia, due to a mass poisoning caused by home-brewed chacha sold at the Kazachy (Cossack) market, according to reports in August 2025. The chacha, an artisanal alcoholic beverage, did not meet safety requirements and led to fatal methanol poisoning.
Two residents of Sochi, a 30-year-old and a 71-year-old woman, were arrested and charged for selling the homemade chacha under the guise of homemade wine and chacha at the market. They pleaded guilty, although investigators clarified they were not the actual producers of the toxic alcohol but acted as sellers of artisanal alcohol made by unknown parties.
Following the tragedy, the police, supported by the Russian Guard, conducted raids at the market, seized several alcoholic beverages for forensic analysis, and launched investigations to identify the true manufacturers and other involved persons in the distribution of this surrogate alcohol.
The cases received widespread attention after an Adler district family suffered multiple deaths due to the chacha purchased from the market, with relatives dying consecutively in hospital intensive care units after drinking the beverage. Evidence suggests the problem is not isolated; several other reports of deaths and hospitalizations linked to chacha from the same market emerged, prompting authorities to monitor and act against such artisanal alcohol vendors extensively.
Authorities have issued warnings to tourists and locals to exercise caution when buying alcohol from untrusted sources to prevent further methanol poisoning incidents. It has been reported that similar illicit alcohol trading occurs along the Black Sea coast, with recent interceptions involving large quantities of homemade chacha, wine, and cognac being investigated.
The internet portal "Kuban 24" reported this information. A criminal case has been opened against the women, and they have been remanded in custody until October 4. The site of the closed Kazachy market must be cleared of all non-capital structures and cleaned up at the expense of the former leaseholder within three months.
