Harrisburg Teenage Cancer Victim Joshua Y. Lopez Honored with Community Support

Joshua Y. Lopez, a 17-year-old resident of Harrisburg, passed away on August 7, 2025, after a courageous two-year battle with sarcoma cancer at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Born on July 9, 2008, in Hollywood, Florida, Joshua moved to York with his family and attended the School District of the City of York. His life was filled with love and support from his family, friends, and the community.

Joshua recently earned his high school diploma, a significant achievement that he celebrated just days before his passing. A GoFundMe campaign was created by his mother, Lily DeJesus, to help cover funeral expenses and to honour Joshua's memory.

The family's home was tragically lost in a fire in 2024, but the community rallied to support them during this difficult time. Joshua's obituary notes that he was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death and was described as a gamer who loved walking with friends, cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles, and spending time with his dog, MaryJane.

A viewing for Joshua will be held on Aug. 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hooper Memorial Home, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Hershey Cemetery.

Joshua is survived by his mother, Lily DeJesus; his father, Ramon Lopez; his grandmothers, Maria Yorro and Annette Thoman; his uncle, Jose Rentas; and his "firefighter family" in York. He is not survived by his stepfather, Robert, his sister, Cattleya, or his brother, Isaias.

Joshua's fight for life captured hearts across the region, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him. The community's outpouring of love and support has been a testament to the impact Joshua had on those around him.
