Tamil Nadu Halts Coldrif Cough Syrup Sales Amid Deadly Chemical Probe
Tamil Nadu's Department of Drugs Control Administration (DDCA) has swiftly moved to halt the sale of Coldrif cough syrup, following the tragic deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Union Health Ministry is now probing potential links to a toxic chemical, diethylene glycol, in the syrup. Five samples, including one from the suspected batch, have been dispatched for testing.
The cough syrup, manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals at its unit in Sunguvarchathram, Kancheepuram district, is at the heart of the investigation. All existing stock has been temporarily frozen at the manufacturer's plant. The deaths of six children in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district over the past three weeks have raised alarming concerns. The suspected cause? Traces of the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol in the syrup.
The DDCA's ban on Coldrif cough syrup sales is a proactive measure to prevent further harm. The Union Health Ministry's investigation is underway, with five samples, including a critical one from the suspected batch, being tested. The manufacturer, Sresan Pharmaceuticals, is under scrutiny as the public awaits official findings.
