Stay Safe at Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Beaches: DLRG Issues Warning on Recklessness and Overconfidence

Lifeguard Association Issues Caution about Reckless Behavior and Overconfidence in Swimmers - Swimmers advised to avoid recklessness and overconfidence for safety reasons.

Swimming season is here, and the German Life-Saving Association (DLRG) urges beachgoers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to exercise caution, especially in light of increased episodes of reckless behavior and overconfidence. DLRG spokesperson Thorsten Erdmann emphasized these issues are causing dangerous situations, resulting in frequent deployments of lifeguards.

The Perils of Regardless Swimming

Extreme temperatures, alcohol consumption, and rushing into the water can all lead to life-threatening predicaments. Swimmers must remember to stick to shallow areas and avoid venturing too far out. Ignoring flag warnings is also a major safety concern, as a red flag typically indicates a swimming ban for hazardous conditions.

Kitesurfing Conundrum

Increased kitesurfing at Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's coast is also raising concerns. Although DLRG appreciates the sport's visual appeal and excitement, it can become risky when kitesurfers weave at high speed between swimmers.

DLRG at the Forefront of Beach Safety

The DLRG is hiring 1,700 lifeguards across several states to safeguard the coastline between Boltenhagen and Usedom this year. In total, there are 30 active local groups overseeing 90 lifeguard towers and 5 stations on inland lakes, with various stations opening from May 17, including the state-of-the-art main lifeguard tower at the sea bridge in Prerow.

Water Rescue Services Gearing Up

The German Red Cross (DRK) in Warnemünde will kick-start the summer season by deploying around 200 volunteers on Rostock's beaches, including Markgrafenheide and Diedrichshagen. Warnemünde, known to be the busiest beach, will have several lifeguard towers, rescue teams, a special rescue jet, and the rescue boat "Wotan" at the ready.

Drowning Statistics

The number of drowning incidents in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern rose to 29 in 2024, compared to 20 in 2023. The majority of victims aged 61 to 70 years old, indicating age can be a significant factor in water-related accidents. However, no child or teenager lost their life in the water last year.

Though no specific information confirms a rise in incidents related to kitesurfing, given the sport's growing popularity, it's essential for enthusiasts to adhere to safety guidelines and regulations. Contacting local authorities or kitesurfing clubs in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can provide additional information about safety measures and restrictions in place.

EC countries could invest more in vocational training for lifeguards, which could lead to improved health-and-wellness among beachgoers by reducing the number of accidents and fatalities. Incorporating fitness-and-exercise and sports education in vocational training programs for lifeguards could also provide them with the necessary skills to safeguard swimmers from various water activities, including kitesurfing. This approach would not only contribute to beach safety but also promote science through advanced lifesaving techniques and equipment.
