Swim instructor in Silver Spring indicted for physically attacking pupils during personal swimming classes
In a shocking turn of events, Tyler Wang’Ombe-Gichuru, a 25-year-old swim instructor from Silver Spring, Maryland, has been charged with sexually assaulting two children under the age of 10 during private swim lessons at a community center in Upper Marlboro on July 22, 2025.
The investigation into these heinous acts is being led by the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Unit (CVAA). Wang’Ombe-Gichuru faces multiple charges, including two counts of second-degree rape of a child under 13, assault, and additional sexual offenses. As of the latest reports, he is currently held without bond at the Department of Corrections.
The alleged crimes took place in both Silver Spring and Upper Marlboro, Maryland. It's important to note that the victims' family met Wang’Ombe-Gichuru at a trampoline park in Laurel, but he does not work at the community center where the incidents occurred.
The victims' family had hired Wang’Ombe-Gichuru to teach the children swimming. The specific details of the charges against Wang’Ombe-Gichuru beyond the previously mentioned second degree rape and multiple sexual assaults and offenses are not provided in the article.
The CVAA detectives are seeking information from anyone with knowledge of this investigation. As of now, only the two children from the July 22 incident have been publicly identified as victims. There is no confirmed information about additional victims, but investigators are seeking further information from the public.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the importance of protecting our children and vigilance in choosing who we allow to work with our children. The Montgomery County teachers' union has filed a grievance due to the school system failing to pay educators, but this is not related to the case of Wang’Ombe-Gichuru.
The Prince George’s County Police Department urges anyone with more information or potential additional victims to contact them. The safety and well-being of our children should always be our top priority.
