SNS 24 Line Struggles: Patient Makes Four Attempts, Unusual Births Reported

A patient in Famalicão had to make four attempts and wait over three hours to be attended to on the SNS 24 line, with calls dropping after 40 minutes. Meanwhile, unusual births occurred in recent days: a baby was born in the reception of Hospital Santos Silva in Gaia, falling and hitting its head, and another was born in an ambulance from the firefighters of Moita, the 15th assisted by these professionals this year. These incidents highlight concerns about waiting times on the SNS 24 line, which are higher than contractually agreed.

The patient's ordeal on the SNS 24 line is not an isolated incident. Waiting times have been consistently higher than what is provided for in current contracts. This has led to calls dropping after extended periods of waiting, as the patient in Famalicão experienced. In recent days, unusual births have occurred, with a baby being born in the reception of Hospital Santos Silva, falling and hitting its head. Another baby was born in an ambulance from the firefighters of Moita, marking the 15th birth assisted by these professionals this year. These incidents raise questions about the strain on healthcare services and the need for improved response times.

The high waiting times on the SNS 24 line and the unusual births in recent days underscore the pressure on healthcare services. While the exact number of births outside of maternities for January to July 2025 is not yet available, it is known that around 60 such births have occurred since the beginning of the year. Compared to the same period in 2024, there were only seven more births in ambulances. Officials are urged to address the concerns raised by these incidents and work to improve response times and the overall quality of healthcare services.
