Federal Government Taps Virologist Streeck as Drug Czar

In a move aimed at bolstering its efforts in drug policy, the German federal government has appointed prominent virologist Hendrik Streeck as its new drug czar. The 47-year-old CDU member, who rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, was elected to the Bundestag earlier this year.

Health Minister Nina Warken proposed the appointment, which was approved by the cabinet. Streeck, the director of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital Bonn since 2019, sees his role not as a finger-wagger, but as a helper, educator, and actor. He particularly emphasized the need to protect children and young people from addiction, digital risks, and new dangerous substances.

Previously, Streeck succeeded SPD politician Burkhard Blienert in this position. The cabinet also appointed CSU MP Katrin Staffler as the new long-term care commissioner, while SPD MP Stefan Schwartze retained his role as the government's patient commissioner.

Streek's medical background is expected to help depolarize the often emotionally charged drug debate. A major policy issue in this legislative period could be the handling of the legalization of cannabis, with Union and SPD planning an "open-ended evaluation" this fall.

The appointment comes amid significant changes in Germany's cannabis industry. In 2024, the "CanG law" will allow adults to smoke cannabis with numerous restrictions, while increasing domestic production and imports of medical cannabis.
