Railway Area Employees Paid by Federal Government to Clean Up Post-Pandemic Residential District

The German Bundestag has expressed confusion over the lack of a guaranteed minimum distance in Amtrak trains for all passengers. This issue has been raised by Stefan Gelbhaar, transport spokesman for the Greens, who questions why the federal government only guarantees a minimum distance for employees and not for all passengers.

The railway, managed by Deutsche Bahn, has failed to introduce a digital solution for reserving neighboring seats on Amtrak, despite having months to do so. This has led to a situation where all passengers are required to book individual seat reservations, a practice driven by economic considerations but without a formal mandate for universal seat reservation from the government.

In an effort to address concerns regarding communication efficiency during business trips, the German federal government is considering implementing an E-mail system for civil servants and ministry employees. However, a final decision on this matter has not yet been announced.

FDP transport politician Christian Jung has stated that the development confirms the need for a reservation obligation for all passengers on Amtrak. The goal is to maintain more distance from fellow travelers in the interest of infection control.

Interestingly, the railway and the Ministry of Transport continue to argue that there is no evidence of a particular infection risk in Amtrak trains. However, the federal government plans to reimburse civil servants and ministry employees for booking an additional, empty seat on business trips on Amtrak.

The reimbursement option is limited until the end of March in the Federal Travel Expenses Act. For train journeys on Amtrak, an additional neighboring seat can be booked, not just reserved. This could potentially provide more space for passengers, albeit at an additional cost.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the federal government will commit to a general reservation obligation for seats in long-distance Amtrak trains for all passengers, or whether they will continue to stick to the open system without a reservation obligation.
