Hamburg Knife Attack: Suspect Released from Psychiatric Clinic Previously
A knife attack at Hamburg Central Station left 18 individuals injured, and investigative details regarding the perpetrator have emerged. According to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health spokesperson, the suspect, a 39-year-old woman, was discharged from a psychiatric clinic in the Cuxhaven district the day before the attack.
The clinic reported no compelling reasons to keep the woman hospitalized at the time of her release. The Ministry did not disclose specific details about her illness, citing privacy rights and medical confidentiality.
The suspect has confessed to the crime and was arrested on Friday evening. The attack occurred randomly at the platform, and a judge subsequently ordered the suspect to be detained in a psychiatric facility. The detention order stipulates attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm in 15 cases, as stated by the police.
The suspect seeks no further treatment voluntarily. Before her release, a comprehensive assessment was conducted to gauge her risk of self-harm or danger to others.
Three women and a man remain in a stable condition after sustaining severe injuries. Meanwhile, seven individuals experienced light injuries.
The swift intervention of two bystanders allegedly prevented more people from getting injured. Hamburg's Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, confirmed that some injured patients have been discharged from the hospital, with no new updates on the health status of the remaining victims.
Police reported that the woman has no fixed address and was frequently noticed by the police in Lower Saxony since 2021 for displaying signs of mental illness. Last year, criminal proceedings were initiated against her, though they were not knife-related, and no weapons permits were held.
Successful intervention by police officers led to the suspect's arrest without resistance. The weapon used in the attack has been secured.
Hamburg's main station, with over 500,000 daily passengers, is one of the busiest transportation hubs in Germany. The incident occurred during rush hour, and the station returned to normal just hours after the attack.
