Cycling Without Age Project Brings Community Together at CSD in Neukirchen-Vluyn

The Cycling Without Age project, a global initiative aimed at giving seniors and people with limited mobility the opportunity to enjoy bike rides and reconnect with their communities, has made its way to Neukirchen-Vluyn. This project, established locally, is a central theme of the Community Street Day (CSD), as emphasized by the organisers.

The project's origins date back to 2012, when Ole Kassow founded Cycling Without Age in Denmark with the aim of helping elders regain access to cycling experiences despite mobility challenges. Since then, it has grown internationally, with local programs providing volunteer pilots and specialized bikes for free, enjoyable rides.

The project's impact in Neukirchen-Vluyn is significant. The specially designed rickshaws, with a total of five vehicles accommodating ten seats, enable people who might not otherwise attend the CSD to become part of the community. The rides offer social and psychological benefits, allowing seniors and those with disabilities to engage in outdoor activities, connect with their environment, reduce isolation, and enjoy improved well-being.

The project's goal is to give people time and mobility in Neukirchen-Vluyn, and it supports the diversity and openness of events in the city. During the CSD, volunteer pilots drive the rickshaws during the festive parade, setting a joint sign for tolerance and acceptance, according to the organisers.

The rickshaws of the Cycling Without Age project symbolise the themes of the CSD, and the project aims to help people learn from each other in Neukirchen-Vluyn. It also aims to promote learning and rediscovering the city of Neukirchen-Vluyn together, as stated by the organisers, Karin Fetzer, Christian Pelikan, Greens Neukirchen-Vluyn, and Rüdiger Eichholtz, Cultural Projects Lower Rhine.

Those interested in riding in the rickshaws can register in advance with Wilhelm Ehrmann, whose contact information for rickshaw registration is: phone: 0151/55565780 or email: [email protected].

The Cycling Without Age project is featured at the CSD in Neukirchen-Vluyn, and it continues to grow steadily in urban and rural areas globally, bringing similar benefits to its local elderly and mobility-challenged populations as part of the wider Cycling Without Age network.
