Deadly Aviation Disaster Strikes Bangladesh

In a tragic turn of events, Bangladesh is reeling from the aftermath of the deadliest aviation disaster in decades. On July 21, 2025, a Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) training jet, an F-7 BGI, crashed into the Milestone School and College in Dhaka, resulting in the loss of at least 31 lives, including 25 children and a teacher, and injuring over 170 others[1][2].

The aircraft, an advanced variant of the Chinese-designed Chengdu J-7/F-7, was delivered to Bangladesh between 2011 and 2013[1]. The crash occurred in a densely populated area near the school, causing devastating casualties. Eyewitnesses described a loud boom and immediate fire upon impact, with the jet reportedly suffering a mechanical fault moments after takeoff[2].

Among the victims was Tasnim Afroz Ayman, a 10-year-old girl who remained calm and composed during her final hours despite undergoing excruciating pain, according to her uncle, Saiful Islam[3]. Tasnim was receiving treatment in the High Dependency Unit with 45 percent burns before her unfortunate demise, confirmed Sarkar Farhana Kabir, hospital coordinator[3].

Nazia, another victim, was just 13 years old. Her last words were a request for an ice cream and a plea not to let go of her hand[4]. Nazia kept asking about her younger brother Nafi until her last breath[4]. The youngest victim of the crash was only nine years old[5].

India and Singapore have stepped forward to assist their Bangladesh colleagues by sending doctors specializing in burn care[6]. As of Friday, 51 people are still receiving treatment in various city hospitals[7].

The incident has sparked a wave of mourning across the nation, with Dhaka observing a national day of mourning, flags at half-staff, and prayers held across places of worship[1]. The tragedy has also reignited debate concerning the placement of military training bases near densely populated urban areas and the adequacy of pilot training[1]. Public reaction includes protests by students demanding accountability and safety reforms following the incident[2].

Bangladesh’s interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed deep sorrow and vowed a thorough investigation into the disaster[1]. This remains the most catastrophic aviation incident for Bangladesh in recent decades, highlighting critical concerns about air force operations in crowded urban environments[1][2].
