A Peek Inside Fetterman's Turmoil

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman dismisses accusations from a former staff member suggesting his performance is declining.

John Fetterman, the Democratic senator from Pennsylvania, has brushed aside concerns about his mental health that a former top aide raised in a revealing letter. The letter, penned by Adam Jentleson, Fetterman's ex-chief of staff, highlighted his worries about Fetterman's state, particularly his adherence to his recovery plan following his 2022 stroke and his subsequent hospitalization for depression in 2023.

In a communiqué dated May 2024 to Dr. David Williamson, Fetterman's neuropsychiatrist at Walter Reed Medical Center, Jentleson expressed his apprehension, stating that Fetterman's actions suggested he wasn't taking his medications as prescribed. Moreover, Jentleson highlighted a multitude of concerning behaviors, such as conspiratorial thinking, megalomania, erratic mood swings, and drawn-out, self-centered monologues.

The initial report on this letter was published by New York magazine, which also reported on concerns about Fetterman's well-being from other anonymous current and former staff members. Fetterman dismissed both the letter and the magazine article as a one-source story with anonymous sources, coming from a left-leaning publication.

Broadening the narrative, Jentleson's email to Williamson revealed that the former chief of staff was concerned about Fetterman's continued lack of adherence to his recovery plan. He noted that they often observed warning signs discussed during Fetterman's discharge, including conspiratorial thinking, inflated self-perceptions, unfathomable highs and lows, and fabricated untruths, which were, ironically, obvious to everyone around them.

When prompted about his message to those expressing worries about his condition, Fetterman dismissed their concerns, labeling them disgruntled staffers and calling the story a hit piece. However, Jentleson maintained his stance, stating he hoped Fetterman received the help he needed.

Throughout this turmoil, Fetterman has been candid about his struggles with depression following his stroke. In a 2023 interview with Kristen Welker of NBC News' Meet the Press, Fetterman admitted, "People hear all their lives about 'I can't get out of bed,' but you really can't understand what that really means. You can't get out of bed until it happens to you. And it did."

Despite the controversy surrounding Fetterman's mental health, his Democratic colleagues have remained supportive. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., expressed his confidence in Fetterman, calling him a good legislator. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., who recently dined with Fetterman, commented on his well-being, praising his unique ability to connect with the general public. Despite his ongoing health challenges, Welch reiterated his support for the senator.
