Sizzling Summer Demands Caution! Health Minister Unveils Heat Protection Plan Encouraging Alcohol and Grill Abstinence

Opt for avoiding alcohol and grilling meals during the hot weather, as per the advice of Nina Warken.

Get ready for the scorching heat, Germany! As the mercury rises, Federal Health Minister Nina Warken rolls out her second nationwide heat protection plan, zeroing in on recreational sports to keep athletes and fans cool and safe.

Amidst the 28.8 million sports enthusiasts under the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), Warken cautions that increased temperatures demand extra care. Coupled with the DOSB, Warken unveils three comprehensive heat protection plans— psychotherapeutic practices, pharmacies, and organized sports—each targeting distinct groups at risk.

The heat protection plans are designed to "educate citizens about the health hazards of heat" according to the Federal Ministry of Health. Specifically, they focus on protecting the elderly, chronically ill, pregnant women, young children, athletes, and more. The plans offer essential guidance to help these groups navigate the heat.

Sports Enthusiasts, Brace Yourself!

The emphasis on recreational sports is substantial. The directive, spanning 13 pages, lists practical tips and recommendations to ensure a safe and enjoyable sporting experience:

  • Suspending and ending competitions based on criteria
  • Providing cold water buckets or watering cans
  • Offering free sunscreen and sunglasses for kids
  • Closing exposed sports facilities during heatwaves
  • Excluding sick athletes from competitions
  • Extending summer breaks while shortening winter breaks
  • Avoiding the sale of alcohol and sugary, caffeinated, and taurine-infused beverages
  • Steering clear of open fire or grill catering

Pharmacies can do their part by installing water dispensers, prioritizing deliveries during hot weather, targeting high-risk individuals, and emphasizing heat dangers. They should also enhance ambience with more blinds and air conditioning or ventilation systems.

Take it Easy, Psychotherapeutic Practices!

For psychotherapeutic practices, advice includes creating lists of high-risk patients, reviewing medications, setting appointments either early in the morning or late at night.

Get Set, Germany!

While the first national heat protection plan debuted in 2023 under Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, other nations like France have been proactive since 2004. Thousands of lives in Germany have been claimed annually due to heat-related causes.

[1] General measures for heat protection may include actions such as hydration, appropriate attire, and awareness of heat-related illnesses.[5] Germany's climate adaptation strategy addresses the impacts of extreme weather events, possibly including guidelines for outdoor activities during heatwaves.

  1. In the scope of community policy, Federal Health Minister Nina Warken's heat protection plan urges sports enthusiasts to prioritize health-and-wellness through fitness-and-exercise, following the announced ban on alcohol during recreational activities and discouraging grill usage to avoid heat-related hazards.
  2. To further create a safe and healthy environment, workplace-wellness is promoted under the heat protection plans, with pharmacies encouraged to set up water dispensers, adjust compliance patterns for high-risk individuals, and enhance facilities with better ventilation or air conditioning.
  3. As part of the ongoing effort to reduce heat-related casualties, vocational training is essential to ensure that all service providers – from sports coaches to pharmacy staff – are aware of the symptoms, prevention, and treatment techniques related to heat-related illnesses, empowering them to contribute positively to community health and well-being.
