Nurse aged 24 found deceased at a nursing home in Hooghly, West Bengal; family insists on autopsy at a central facility.

A 24-year-old nurse was found dead at a nursing home in Singur, Hooghly district, West Bengal. The body of the nurse is currently being preserved at the Kolkata police morgue.

Initially, the postmortem was not conducted at a central government facility due to the local facility having only one forensic expert and the family's unwillingness to consent to the autopsy being done there. However, the family, expressing mistrust in the state police and the initial handling of the case, demanded that the autopsy be conducted at AIIMS Kalyani, a central government institution.

The family's insistence arose from suspicions of foul play (rape and murder), lack of faith in the local police investigation, and the desire for a thorough and transparent probe, including a CBI investigation. After delays and protests, the autopsy was eventually conducted at AIIMS Kalyani, per the family’s and political leaders’ requests.

BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has raised concerns about the case. Adhikari has demanded that the postmortem of the deceased nurse be conducted in a central government hospital or by a central government doctor. Adhikari has also alleged that his constituency in Nandigram sent a villager for a nursing job to Singur, where she died under suspicious circumstances.

The victim's parents, who are BJP workers, have expressed distrust towards the West Bengal state government and have requested that the postmortem be conducted at a central government facility like AIIMS or a similar hospital. Tamoghna Ghosh, North Kolkata BJP President, has mentioned that the family intends to move court to ensure their demands are "respected".

As of now, nobody has been detained in connection with the nurse's death. Kolkata Central Police DC Indira Mukherjee has stated that there are sufficient arrangements to preserve the body. If a formal FIR needs to be registered, it will be done, and necessary action as per law will be taken.

Political tensions and allegations of cover-up by the local police and nursing home management have intensified the family's insistence on an independent and credible autopsy. However, no information is provided about the outcome of the family's demands or the progress of the investigation into the nurse's death.

Science and health-and-wellness news outlets are discussing the insistence of the family of a deceased nurse in Singur, Hooghly district, West Bengal, for an autopsy to be conducted at a central government facility, such as AIIMS Kalyani. This demand comes due to suspicions of foul play, lack of faith in the local police investigation, and the desire for a thorough and transparent probe, including a CBI investigation. Crime-and-justice reports suggest that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has raised concerns about the case and demanded that the postmortem be conducted in a central government hospital or by a central government doctor. The general-news coverage highlights the political tensions and allegations of a cover-up by the local police and nursing home management, with the family intending to move court to ensure their demands are "respected." The elections in India could potentially see the nurse's death become a significant issue if the investigation, or the lack thereof, remains unsatisfactory to the deceased's family and political supporters.
