NSF Toughens Stance on Sexual Harassment in Research Community
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has implemented a new policy to address sexual harassment within its funded research community. Starting September 21, 2018, grantee organizations are required to report findings and administrative actions related to sexual harassment involving NSF-funded principal investigators or co-principal investigators.
NSF's new policy aims to hold harassers accountable and preserve support for responsible researchers. It requires awardee organizations to notify NSF of any findings, determinations, or administrative actions involving sexual harassment or assault by NSF-funded principal investigators or co-principal investigators. NSF will then consult with these organizations to determine appropriate actions, which may include substituting or removing principal investigators, reducing award funding, or suspending or terminating awards.
The policy encourages individuals with harassment complaints to report incidents to their institution and directly to the NSF Office of Diversity and Inclusion. NSF is committed to ensuring the safety and security of people supported by its awards and will work with awardee institutions to carefully consider each case. The policy was finalized after considering nearly 200 comments received during a 60-day comment period.
NSF's new policy sends a clear message that sexual harassment will not be tolerated within its funded research community. By requiring prompt reporting and imposing serious consequences, NSF aims to foster a safe and respectful environment for all researchers. The foundation will continue to monitor progress and engage with the research community to ensure the effectiveness of its actions on sexual harassment.
