Norovirus, not related to the flu, causes acute gastroenteritis. Symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. The outbreak on the Serenade of the Seas was reported on September 28, with over 90 passengers and four crew members affected. Norovirus spreads easily in close living environments like cruise ships. It can persist on surfaces for a long time and only a small amount is needed to cause illness. Washing surfaces with approved products like bleach and hands with soap and water are effective prevention methods. Alcohol hand sanitizers are less effective. Stewart Chiron, a cruise industry expert, notes the high demand for cruises currently.
