New Encumbrance Rules: Weight Affects Speed and Abilities

Carrying too much weight slows you down. New rules make this clear, affecting your character's speed and abilities based on what they carry.

New Encumbrance Rules: Weight Affects Speed and Abilities

New rules for creature encumbrance have been announced, affecting speed and abilities based on weight carried. The German Institution for Statutory Accident Insurance and Prevention (DGUV) adapted these rules for the 5th edition in 2011, building on earlier work by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA).

Encumbrance is calculated based on stones carried, with weapons, armor, and other items having set weights. A character's encumbrance status determines speed and ability modifiers:

Quadrupeds have a doubled encumbrance rule compared to bipeds. Tiny creatures have their encumbrance halved, while larger creatures face a doubled rule for each size category above Medium. A character is heavily encumbered at more than two-thirds of their Strength in stones, and encumbered at more than one-third. Speed drops by 10 feet for encumbered characters and by 20 feet for heavily encumbered ones. The latter also suffer disadvantage on Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution checks, attack rolls, and saving throws.

Containers can carry weight without counting towards encumbrance. A character can push, drag, or lift up to twice their carrying capacity without carrying it.

These updated encumbrance rules aim to provide a more realistic and balanced gameplay experience, considering the weight characters carry and its impact on their abilities and speed test. They reflect the work of safety and health institutions, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable gaming environment.
