Mobile devices banned in schools of Bremen

Mobile phones are taking a hike in Bremen's educational institutes. From June 1st, mobile phones will be a no-go zone in primary and secondary schools, while upper secondary schools will make their own rules.

The education authority, after lengthy discussions with school heads, medical professionals, and educators, decided on this ban based on research pointing to the adverse effects of smartphone use on kids' learning, social life, and health.

The Senator for Children and Education, Sascha Karolin Aulepp, weighed in, stating, "Mobile phones are not vital in a student's school life. On the contrary, they divert attention away from learning, maintaining a digital barrier between students, and worst of all, discouraging physical activity." The education department spokesperson added, "The Bremen decree takes effect from June 1st. Phones must be switched off and tucked away safely."

Research shows several negative ramifications:

  1. Learning Loss: Mobile phones distract students, hampering their focus and engagement during classes, hurting their cognitive performance.
  2. Social Limitations: Excessive phone use minimizes face-to-face interactions, hindering social skills, and emotional well-being.
  3. Health Issues: Mobile phones are linked to less physical activity, disrupted sleep patterns, and increased sedentary behavior, leading to various health concerns.

Staff at Bremen's schools will ensure this regulation is enforced, with exceptions made for medically necessary phones. Until now, the city of Bremen followed disparate rules regarding smartphone usage in schools.

In accordance with the decision made by the education authority in Bremen, smartphone use will be prohibited across primary, secondary, and upper secondary schools, effective June 1st. This policy change is based on evidence suggesting that excessive phone use during school hours can result in learning loss, social limitations, and various health issues, such as reduced physical activity, disrupted sleep patterns, and increased sedentary behavior. Moreover, the city's science and health-and-wellness sectors are expected to play valuable roles in providing additional resources and educating school staff on the negative effects of mobile phone usage in the learning environment.
