Phones Banned in Schools: Bremen's Move Based on Scientific Evidence
Mobile devices are prohibited in schools within Bremen.
The city of Bremen is throwing its hat in the ring in the ongoing debate over phone usage in schools. As of June 1st, schools in Bremen will become phone-free zones. This decision stems from scientific findings that highlight the detrimental effects of smartphone usage during school hours on children's learning, social development, and health.
Elementary and secondary schools across the city will enforce a ban on handheld devices. High schools will have the discretion to decide on phone usage themselves. After extensive discussions with school principals, pediatricians, and education experts, the education authority arrived at this decision.
According to the education authority's spokesperson, children's learning abilities, social development, and health are adversely affected by smartphone usage during school hours. Excessive screen time can lead to shorter attention spans, reduced problem-solving skills, and lower grades. It can also hinder social development, causing weaker social skills, impatience, and emotional outbursts.[1][2][3]
Moreover, smartphone usage during school hours can have detrimental effects on children's health. It can disrupt sleep patterns by suppressing melatonin production, causing sleep problems. It can also contribute to weight problems, mood issues, and self-image problems due to constant exposure to curated digital content.[1][2][3]
Bremen's Senator for Children and Education, Sascha Karolin Aulepp, stated, "Private phones are not necessary in school life. On the contrary, they distract from learning and prevent students from interacting and moving during breaks."[4]
School staff will be responsible for enforcing the phone ban, with exceptions made for medically necessary phones. So far, schools in Bremen had different rules for the use of smartphones.

This ban, supported by pediatricians, education experts, and the education authority, aims to prevent the adverse effects of excessive screen time on children's attention spans, problem-solving skills, and grades, as well as potential health issues like sleep disruption and weight problems.
