Here's the skinny: Lower Saxony's healthcare institution landscape is screaming for a facelift, as hospitals in the region cry foul over an outrageous 3.1 billion euros investment backlog. The Lower Saxony Hospital Association (NKG) has taken it upon themselves to shove this pressing issue under the noses of the state's red-green government.

"Sweet Jesus, the costs are insane!" declared NKG Chairman, Rainer Rempe. According to Rempe, the state ought to dip into its budget surpluses and, beyond their current measures, pad hospitals' coffers. "As the hospital system undergoes reform, the state must pony up for the clinic transformation," Rempe advises, adding that only then can politicians' desired structural change stand a chance.

NKG: Antiquated Hospitals Are a Patient Risk

So, how did the investment backlog come about? The state has been sailing through only half of the annual requirement for years, claims the NKG. The state government, elected in 2022, responded with a special fund in 2023. Yet, in the association's eyes, the investment quota is still insufficient.

The NKG insists that 760 million euros annually is required. However, the state only provides 305 million euros for construction, with an additional 160 million earmarked for equipment and rents.

"Plenty of German hospitals are stuck in the dark ages. Modernization is urgently required to guarantee top-notch care and ensure employees are working in contemporary facilities," exclaims NKG association director, Helge Engelke.
