Madhya Pradesh: 14 Children Dead, Officials Suspended After Toxic Cough Syrup Tragedy

In Madhya Pradesh, a tragedy has unfolded with the deaths of 14 children, allegedly due to a toxic cough syrup. The state government has taken swift action, suspending officials and banning the drug. The children, mostly from Parasia sub-division (11), also included two from Chhindwara city and one from Chaurai tehsil. The state's Drug Controller, Dinesh Maurya, was transferred following the incident. Before the tragedy, local drug control authorities under the health department oversaw medicines in Madhya Pradesh. Investigations led to the suspension of two drug inspectors (Gaurav Sharma and Sharad Kumar Jain) and a Deputy Director (Shobhit Costa). Dr Praveen Soni from Chhindwara was arrested for alleged negligence, and a case was registered against the manufacturer, Sresan Pharmaceutical. The company's Coldrif cough syrup was found to contain a highly toxic substance, leading to its ban. Eight children remain under treatment, with four in a government hospital, one at AIIMS, and three in private facilities. The Madhya Pradesh government's swift response aims to prevent further tragedies and ensure justice for the affected families.
