Listeria infections: Demographics, health conditions, and other details of the 21 people who contracted the contamination
Breaking News: Listeria Outbreak Linked to Chavegrand Dairy Cheeses in France
A listeriosis outbreak linked to soft pasteurized cow’s and goat’s milk cheeses produced by Chavegrand dairy has resulted in at least 21 confirmed cases and two fatalities in France, with four additional cases reported in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway [1][2][4][5].
The affected cheeses, including Camembert, Crémeux, bûches, and brie-style cheeses, were produced before June 23, 2025, and were distributed nationally in France until August 9, 2025, and internationally to at least 32 countries [3][4][5]. The cheeses can be identified by the health mark FR 23.117.001 CE/UE and recall notices on RappelConso [1][3][4][5].
The outbreak investigation involves Santé Publique France, the Pasteur Institute's National Listeria Reference Centre, the General Directorate of Food, and the General Directorate of Health, confirming the link between the illness and Chavegrand cheeses through epidemiological and microbiological evidence [1][3][4].
The production line responsible for the recalled cheeses has been closed and replaced. Despite a very reinforced analysis plan, no trace of Listeria has been found within the Chavegrand dairy [4].
Pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly should be particularly attentive to these symptoms as listeriosis is the second leading cause of death from food poisoning in France [1]. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, headaches, and muscle aches. Anyone who may have these recalled cheeses is strongly advised not to consume them and to consult a doctor if they experience these symptoms after consumption [1][2][4][5].
The cases have been identified in the following regions: Île-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Centre-Val de Loire, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Bretagne, Normandie, and Occitanie [3].
It is important to note that listeria rarely contaminates pasteurized cheeses, but it can occur due to environmental contamination [2][4]. The recall remains in effect as of mid-August 2025, with ongoing alerts issued across affected European countries [3][5].
The Chavegrand dairy company has expressed condolences to the families affected by the listeriosis cases. The government website Rappel Conso has issued a warning about the recalled cheeses, and anyone who may have these products is urged not to consume them. People who have consumed these cheeses and are experiencing fever, headaches, and muscle aches are invited to consult their primary care physician and inform them of this consumption.
