The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a private aid organization backed by the United States and Israel, has been the subject of controversy and criticism since its establishment in May 2025. The organization, which operates several distribution centers in Gaza, aims to deliver food aid to the region's population, but concerns about its role in the politicization of humanitarian assistance and its impact on existing aid networks persist.

During a recent visit to Gaza, a U.S. delegation, led by former U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee, sought to gain a better understanding of the situation on the ground and assess the effectiveness of the GHF's operations. The visit, which lasted approximately five hours, was seen as a gesture to show America's concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

However, images from the visit do not present a full picture of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with reports of deaths due to hunger and people going to these sites as a last resort due to food scarcity. The UN-backed authority on food crises has reported the "worst case scenario of famine" is now playing out in Gaza.

The GHF, led by Johnnie Moore, an evangelical reverend and advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, has been criticized for its role in Gaza's crisis. Reports indicate that the Israeli military coerces humanitarian organizations to work exclusively through GHF or cease independent operations, effectively redirecting aid shipments to GHF without consent from aid groups.

Despite the UN's decades of experience in distributing aid in Gaza, America continues to back its GHF model run by inexperienced armed security contractors. The UN's involvement in distributing aid in Gaza is not being utilized in the current GHF model.

The American delegation will report their assessments back to Washington, and reports of a new plan being formed for Gaza between the US and Israel do not instill a large amount of confidence. The GHF's operations are in contrast to the images and reports of Palestinians getting killed and injured attempting to reach aid at these sites.

As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, the role of the GHF and America's plans to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza remain contentious issues. The UN, humanitarian organizations, and local institutions call for a more coordinated and effective approach to addressing the food crisis in Gaza.
