Leukemia claimed the life of Potofski.
Sports Presenter Ulli Potofski to be Buried in Unique Football Urn on Schalke Fan Field
Ulli Potofski, a well-loved sports presenter who had a lifelong connection with Schalke 04 football club, will be laid to rest in a unique football urn on the Schalke Fan Field. This poignant decision reflects Potofski's last wishes and his deep-rooted passion for the club.
Potofski's partner, Nadja Bogdanovic, shared the news with the magazine "Bunte", revealing that the burial site is located near the Schalke 04 arena and is two kilometers from the stadium. The burial ceremony will include personal and meaningful touches, such as playing the Schalke hymn on the organ and the Steigerlied, a traditional song honoring Ruhr area miners, to illustrate Potofski's strong ties to his hometown and club.
Potofski's journey with leukemia began in mid-May after a blood test revealed the diagnosis. Chemotherapy started immediately, and a matching bone marrow donor was found at the end of July. The bone marrow transplant was initially planned for August 1st at the University Hospital in Essen, but it was postponed due to the donor being on vacation. A new date for the transplant was set for mid-August, but tragically, Potofski passed away on August 3rd before the rescheduled procedure.
Upon returning from the hospital in mid-July, Potofski requested Schalke hand towels, a simple yet heartfelt request that was granted. His partner, Nadja Bogdanovic, also shared that Potofski's favorite club was Schalke 04.
The burial of Potofski in a football urn on the Schalke Fan Field is a fitting tribute to a man who lived and breathed Schalke 04. The ceremony will no doubt be a poignant and emotional event, reflecting the deep bond Potofski shared with the club and his hometown.
