Football Fever: Vietnamese Women's Team Gears up for 2025 International Tournaments

Get ready, football fans! The national women's football team of Vietnam is about to kick things into high gear. Starting today, May 6, they will be training in Ha Noi for three key events scheduled for 2025: the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 qualification, the Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship 2025, and the 33rd SEA Games 33.

Vietnam has set its sights on securing a place in the Asian Cup and dominating the regional tournament. Head coach Mai Ðức Chung has announced a list of 25 players for this training camp, although some veteran players such as Huỳnh Như, Chương Thị Kiều, and Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Ngân are noticeably absentees. These players are busy preparing for the AFC Women's Champions League semi-finals, with HCM City set to face Wuhan Jiangda later this month.

This match is significant, as it's a single leg semi-final and final being played in a centralised venue, May 21-24. The teams competing aren't just vying for continental glory, but also for the sole ticket to the inaugural FIFA Women's Champions Cup in early 2026.

Familiar faces such as goalkeepers Trần Thị Kim Thanh and Khổng Thị Hằng, midfielders Ngân Thị Vạn Sự, Nguyễn Thị Bích Thùy, Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Dung, and Thái Thị Thȁo, and defenders Hoàng Thị Loan, Trần Thị Duyên, and Lương Thị Thu Hương will join the force.

With top goal scorers Như and Ngân out due to their team's commitments, young talents like Nguyễn Minh Chuyên, Tạ Thị Thȕy, and Vũ Thị Hoa will join the front line alongside veteran striker Phạm Hải Yến.

Coach Chung's team will have 10 days to shape up for a friendly match against German Werder Bremen, a game to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. They will also play HCM City FC as part of their training plan.

Post this, the team will jet off to Japan for a ten-day intensive course from June 8-18. Upon return, they will practice in Phú Thọ Province's Việt Trì Stadium for the AFC Asian Cup 2026 qualification, which will be organized there from June 29 to July 5.

Vietnam finds itself in Group E with the UAE, Guam, and the Maldives during the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. While these teams are not considered formidable threats as per their world rankings, Coach Chung and his players are aiming to lead the group and secure an automatic ticket to the finals.

The Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship 2025, also to be held at Viet Tri Stadium, will feature rivals like Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Vietnam will host the tournament from August 7–13, 2025, which may give them a strategic advantage.

Indonesia was previously chosen as the host, but due to conflicting schedules with the 2025 ASEAN U16 Women’s Championship, Indonesia had to withdraw. As a result, the ASEAN Football Federation selected Vietnam as the new host nation.

The 33rd SEA Games will be held in Thailand later in 2025. Vietnam had managed to defend their crown and win the gold for the fourth consecutive time at the previous Games in Cambodia in 2023.
