KMPDU Issues 7-Day Ultimatum to County Governments Over Health Sector Reforms

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has escalated its dispute with county governments, issuing a seven-day ultimatum for reforms in the health sector. The union, led by Secretary-General Davji Atellah, accuses county leaders of neglecting workers' welfare and failing to enforce Collective Bargaining agreements.

Atellah has warned that if an agreement is not reached within the ultimatum, Atellah has the power to direct medics to withdraw their services. This comes amidst ongoing strikes, with intern doctors in Kiambu County collecting redeployment letters from the Ministry of Health after a four-month strike. Atellah singled out Kiambu County, where Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been accused of ignoring calls for dialogue.

County governments have been criticized for deliberately delaying salaries and promotions for medical staff. The Health Union Caucus has warned of joint industrial action over persistent injustices against healthcare workers. Atellah claims county leaders are playing 'ego games' at the expense of people's lives, with reforms in the health sector being stalled due to a lack of cooperation with medical unions.

The KMPDU's seven-day ultimatum to county governments highlights the growing frustration among healthcare workers over unaddressed grievances. If a resolution is not found, medical services could be withdrawn, further straining the already burdened health sector.
