Investigation on Kristina Rady's suicide continues, according to the co-director of the documentary centered on Bertrand Cantat

In a chilling reopening of a closed case, the investigation into the possible acts of voluntary violence committed by Bertrand Cantat against his ex-wife, Kristina Rady, has been revived. This development comes following the release of a Netflix documentary series, From Rockstar to Killer: The Cantat Case, which shed light on new claims and testimonies that were absent from previous investigations.

The series, released in March 2025, has rekindled public and prosecutorial interest in the case. It has brought to light allegations of a violent altercation that led to scalp detachment and bruises on Rady, as well as a distressing voicemail message she left before her untimely death by suicide in 2010.

Prosecutors in Bordeaux, France, are now reviewing these fresh claims and testimonies to determine if Cantat, a renowned French musician, committed intentional violence prior to Rady's death. The reopened investigation aims to examine potential acts of violence that were not considered in four previous investigations, all of which had been closed without charges.

Interestingly, Cantat's lawyer stated they were unaware of the investigation’s reopening when contacted publicly.

The Cantat case has sparked a broader discussion, with Karine Dusfour, a prominent French feminist, calling on the state to allocate more funds to reduce the number of femicides. She estimates that a sum of two billion euros is the amount demanded by associations to effectively tackle this issue. Dusfour believes that the careers of powerful, idolized men, such as Cantat, have not been ruined, despite the serious allegations against them.

In the context of the Cantat case, Dusfour believes that a woman's life is worth very little. In her view, the life of two women - Rady and the woman who accused Cantat - is worth even less. This sentiment underscores the issue of the silence and fear surrounding women's issues, a problem that the Cantat case has brought to the forefront.

As the investigation continues, the Cantat case serves as a stark reminder of the need for action against femicides and the importance of addressing the systemic issues that allow such violence to persist.
