Internet Misuse Emerges as a Prevalent Issue on College Campus: Problematic Internet Usage (PIU)
Problematic Internet Use (PIU) among U.S. university students, characterized by excessive online engagement, is causing strains in family relationships. A study conducted using focus groups revealed three key themes: family connectedness, family conflict/disconnection, and Internet overuse among other family members.
One of the striking findings was the disconnect and conflict that PIU creates within families. University students with PIU reported that members of their families, including small children and parents, also overuse the Internet. This overuse leads to reduced communication, emotional distance, and conflict within the family unit.
For instance, some participants shared that their parents, who are technophobes and don't even know how to turn on computers, are unaware of the extent of their children's online activities. On the other hand, some participants' younger siblings, such as a four-year-old little brother, are always on an iPad and get defensive when attempts are made to set boundaries.
Moreover, a cousin of one participant, around 10-12 years old, is addicted to video games and has impaired vision due to long hours of play. This highlights the intergenerational impact of PIU on family members.
The study also found that PIU is associated with negative psychological outcomes, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and impulsivity that impair decision-making and emotional regulation. These psychological challenges can further exacerbate family conflicts.
Interestingly, some participants described ignoring their families during visits home due to Internet use. One participant even compared her own Internet use to that of her mother, who talks about her phone use at the dinner table.
The conclusions of the study suggest that PIU affects family relationships, and those who suffer adverse consequences from PIU may have difficulty addressing their PIU due to requirements to use the Internet for classes and assignments. This highlights the need for strategies to help students manage their online activities in a healthy and balanced manner.
In summary, PIU is a behavioral addiction with characteristics similar to substance use disorders, and it adversely affects family relationships by increasing isolation and conflict among U.S. university students. The study underscores the importance of addressing PIU to preserve family bonds and support the well-being of students.
