In a significant move towards addressing drug-related issues, the city of Bremen is set to establish an Integrated Drug Consumption Room. This facility, scheduled to open in October 2024, will span approximately 1,340 square meters and will be located on the Jakobus parking lot.

The Integrated Drug Consumption Room will be a hub for various services, aiming to provide a comprehensive solution to those struggling with addiction. It will connect the existing drug consumption containers with the counseling and stay offers of the Contact and Counselling Centre (KBZ) in the Tivoli high-rise.

The facility will consist of three modules. Module 1 will offer a medical ambulance, substitution therapies under qualified medical care, psychosocial support, and spaces for both insured and uninsured users. Module 2 will feature a large common area, including a café, kitchen, counseling rooms, laundry facilities, showering facilities, clothing distribution, telephone facilities, internet access, and support with daily matters. Module 3 will be equipped with ten supervised places for intravenous and inhalative drug consumption.

Sterile consumption utensils will be provided, and immediate help will be available in case of suspected overdoses. The facility will also include areas for resting and washing clothes, showering, and receiving clothing. Consultations on risk-reduced consumption will also be offered.

The Integrated Drug Consumption Room will be operated by comeback gGmbH, a non-profit company in the ambulatory drug aid system. The cost of the renovation work is estimated to be around 3.6 million euros, and the project is expected to take at least a year to complete.

The goal of this facility is to make it the preferred point of contact for people with addiction problems in the area of the main station. The Integrated Drug Consumption Room aims to improve accessibility and increase safety for all users.

Since September 2020, around 190 people per month have been using the supervised drug consumption containers in Bremen. With the introduction of the Integrated Drug Consumption Room, the city hopes to provide a more holistic approach to addressing drug-related issues and supporting those in need.
