Inhabitants of Petropavlovsk express concerns over rampant infestations

Residents of Petropavlovsk are expressing distress due to a swarming infestation of insects that has made it challenging to venture outdoors. The overabundance of midges and mosquitoes, described as relentless, has led to an unpleasant living situation, particularly as the sun sets.

One Petropavlovsk resident shared their struggles, stating, "The children are covered in bites, and the mosquitoes are terrible. As the sun sets, a whole horde of mosquitoes begins to descend, affecting the entire family."

The local government has earmarked 20 million tenge from the budget for pest control this year. However, unexpected heavy rainfall has hampered timely disinfection, prolonging the outbreak.

Currently, the focus of disinfection efforts is on densely populated areas, including parks, recreation zones, and the outskirts of the city.

The city's akimat provided an update on the situation, stating, "In total, 600 hectares are scheduled for treatment in the city. Work will continue until September, meaning multiple treatments will take place by then. More than 2,000 hectares are planned to be treated by September."

It's noteworthy that similar complaints were raised last year by Uralsk residents, following severe floods that caused an influx of mosquitoes and midges. Flood-affected villages, such as Koba in the Akmola region, have also reported noticing the insect invasion this year.

The flooding and subsequent insect infestation in Petropavlovsk follow Kazakhstan's April 2025 flood control measures, which saw the pumping out of over 4 million cubic meters of water and the maintenance of ditches to prevent flooding[1][3].
