Unfiltered Take on Alcohol Dependence in Lower Austria
Let's dive right into the gritty details of alcohol issues in Lower Austria, where roughly 21% of the 370,000 booze-dependent folks in Austria are tucked away. This staggering number has put the spotlight on Lower Austria during Austria's "Alcohol Dialogue Week," a national initiative aimed at promoting prevention and treatment options.
It's about time we opened our eyes to the issue and acknowledge that help is out there for those battling alcohol dependence, stated Spitalslandesrat Ludwig Schleritzko (ÖVP) at a press event held at the NOÖ Klinikum Mauer.
This dialogue week is an essential endeavor that encourages folk to size up their own drinking habits and cultivate a sense of empathy for those grappling with alcohol dependence, Schleritzko stated.
Booze Ain't a Given, It's a Choice
"It's crucial not to consider alcohol as some default element in our society, or even a crutch for coping with special challenges or regular stressors," explained the Landesrat.
New Day Clinic: A Battle Station Against Booze AbuseLiving proof of the commitment to combat alcohol dependence is the day clinic kitted with 12 beds and an exclusive alcohol dependence station with 32 beds at Landesklinikum Mauer. Seven clinics across the state run day clinics with 164 places associated with psychiatric departments.
Sober Life: What's the Point?Since the Corona pandemic, the alcohol station at Mauer has been bursting at the seams due to capacity constraints, according to the head of the addiction department in Mauer, Primar Christian Korbel. Korbel, who is also the medical director of the clinic, advocates for prevention, responsible alcohol consumption, and early education. His goal is to keep people from slipping into the vicious cycle of addiction and dependence.
Fitness for the Elderly: No Protection Against BoozeIn 2024, a total of 538 patients were admitted to the clinic due to alcohol disorders, and 200 could be admitted for detoxification and treatment. Alcohol dependence is a severe, repeated affliction that significantly shortens life expectancy and hampers quality of life, declared Korbel.
The clinic offers a comprehensive therapeutic and medical-psychiatric program to treat and detoxify patients in Mauer.
Physical Training
Korbel has also concocted a medical training therapy to counteract depression and other mental illnesses. The aim is to complete 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
A Unique Exposition, Like Never BeforeResponsible alcohol consumption is a personal concern for Korbel, who has come up with his "2er-Regel": no alcohol for 2 days a week, 2 weeks without booze every six months, 2 months without alcohol every year, and a maximum of only 2 drinks per day. And always have at least two people around when drinking, since loneliness is a perilous catalyst for alcohol dependence, claimed the primar.
