In a developing and controversial situation, German non-binary anti-fascist activist Maja T. finds themselves in a critical health condition while detained in a Hungarian prison. Maja was extradited from Germany to Hungary in June 2024 to face charges related to clashes with far-right groups during a counter-demonstration in Budapest in February 2023.

The controversy surrounding Maja's case has been ongoing, with many arguing that Maja would not receive a fair trial in Hungary's increasingly authoritarian legal system. Human rights groups have voiced concerns that the charges are politically motivated.

Maja began a hunger strike in early June 2025, which by July had lasted for several weeks. The strike was initiated to protest harsh prison conditions, including solitary confinement and lack of proper treatment. Due to severe health deterioration, including significant weight loss and fatigue, Maja was transferred to a prison hospital located near the Romanian border.

Despite the transfer, Maja's health condition remains critical. The treating doctors consider Maja's situation very critical, and they are considering the implantation of a heart pacemaker. However, it has been made clear that Maja should not have a heart pacemaker implanted against their will, as it would not help medically, and the low heart rate is a direct consequence of the hunger strike.

The health condition of Maja has raised concerns about inhumane conditions in Hungarian prisons. Maja should not be tied to their bed, as this would be considered cruel and medically unnecessary. A transfer to a civilian hospital could be considered as an alternative, but Maja would be continuously tied to their bed there due to security measures not existing.

The controversy surrounding Maja's detention and treatment has sparked widespread solidarity actions across Europe, with demonstrations in several cities. Prominent figures, including Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt, have called for Maja's release and criticized the Hungarian government's handling of the case.

Maja's father has also joined the call, demanding the urgent end to solitary confinement and the return of Maja to Germany. He assumes that Maja will continue the hunger strike due to the solitary confinement. The possibility of Maja serving a 24-year prison sentence remains, but the immediate concern is Maja's critical health condition.

The German politicians from the Greens and the Left have also demanded Maja's handover to Germany, citing concerns about Maja's safety and fair trial rights. However, the court in Budapest has recently rejected an application for transfer to house arrest for Maja T.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, with hopes for a resolution that ensures Maja's safety and human rights.
