Housing authorities rally behind underage victims leaving home due to domestic violence.
In a heartwarming display of community support, the Buddy Bag Foundation, a national charity dedicated to providing essential items to children forced into emergency accommodation, recently partnered with housing provider Places for People and contractor Fortem at the annual Housing Community Summit in Liverpool.
The initiative, which saw the preparation of 'buddy bags' filled with 12 essential items, including toiletries, pyjamas, socks, books, stationary, and a hand-knitted toy, was met with overwhelming approval. Chris Sutton, Head of Business Development at Fortem, expressed his support, stating that the Buddy Bag initiative provides immediate support to families in crisis.
Greg Reed, Group CEO at Places for People, commented that the impact of a Buddy Bag on a child entering emergency housing is truly transformational. The prepared 'buddy bags' were distributed to children through women's refuges and emergency housing services, offering a glimmer of comfort in difficult times.
The Buddy Bag Foundation, founded by Karen Williams OBE in 2015, has delivered over 70,200 backpacks with the help of more than 6,400 volunteers. The organization's work is gaining traction, with more organizations considering hosting their own initiatives.
Delegates at the event expressed feelings of inspiration to host future Buddy Bag initiatives within their own organizations. The event received support from several senior leaders, including Kate Henderson, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation; Elly Hoult, President of the Chartered Institute of Housing; and Kirsty Wells, Chair of Women in Social Housing (WISH) Scotland.
Karen Williams, founder of the Buddy Bag Foundation, expressed that the strong support from housing leaders will have a lasting impact. The Buddy Bag Foundation's work is especially vital given that an estimated 48,000 children enter emergency care in the UK each year.
In other news, food inflation is climbing and putting pressure on UK household budgets, while an amount of over £1.1 billion has been announced for the development of UK coastal towns and cities. These developments underscore the importance of initiatives like the Buddy Bag Foundation, which strive to provide essential support to those in need.
