Flu infection numbers have risen sharply since the COVID-19 pandemic - Hessian Health Ministry Warns: Flu Cases Surge, Vaccine Recommendations Expanded
The Hessian Health Ministry has issued a stark warning: flu infections have surged in the region. In the winter of 2024/2025, nearly 21,000 cases were reported, a significant increase from the 10,800 cases in 2019/2020. In response, the ministry has expanded its vaccination recommendations to include pregnant women from the second trimester and people with chronic illnesses, alongside the usual advice for those aged 60 and over.
The ministry attributed the sharp rise in flu cases to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, which has led to increased social mixing and a resurgence of seasonal viruses. Pregnant women and those with chronic conditions are particularly vulnerable to complications from the flu. The vaccine is the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation.
The flu vaccine is now recommended for a broader range of people. Those aged 60 and over, pregnant women from the second trimester, and individuals with chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung conditions should prioritise getting vaccinated. The ministry urges everyone in these groups to consult their GP and arrange vaccination as soon as possible.
The flu vaccine is crucial for protecting vulnerable groups in Hesse. With flu infections on the rise, it is vital for those advised to get vaccinated to do so promptly. The Hessian Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation and will update recommendations as needed.
