Health Workers in Algarve Launch a Protest

Healthcare Professionals in Algarve Region Go on Strike

Healthcare professionals in the Unified Health System (SNS) in the Algarve region are currently on strike, protesting against a severe shortage of staff, worsening working conditions, and burnout. The strike, which started on August 7, 2025, involves doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers from the Southern Zone and the Autonomous Regions.

The primary demands of the striking healthcare professionals are hiring more personnel, valuing careers and salaries, and filling existing vacant positions to improve service capacity and reduce staff exhaustion. They are frustrated by the lack of adequate staffing, especially during the busy summer period when the population doubles due to tourism.

The healthcare workers are also upset that the government has not granted the Algarve region access to "vagas carenciadas" (special hardship posts) that provide additional incentives, which have been made available to other underserved regions but not the Algarve. They argue that very high local housing costs and the ongoing excessive overtime work are exacerbating the situation.

Union leaders and workers have emphasized that these conditions lead to increased requests for dismissal and contract termination, further aggravating staff shortages and risking patient care quality despite the workers' dedication. The strike is coordinated by several unions representing medical doctors (SMZS-FNAM), nurses (SEP), and other public service healthcare workers.

Tiago Botelho, president of the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS), does not fully understand the reasons given for the strike. He has suggested that the additional motivations may be related to union structures acting for political reasons. However, the healthcare professionals have made a joint statement expressing their concerns about the current situation.

The strike is scheduled from midnight to midnight and has implications for the quality and availability of healthcare services in the region. In many services, there is a decrease in the number of professionals per shift. The union leaders and workers hope that the strike will bring about necessary changes to improve working conditions and staffing levels in the healthcare sector.
