CommonWell Health Alliance Achieves CMS-Aligned Network Status

The CommonWell Health Alliance, a nonprofit member-driven alliance and Qualified Health Information Network, has announced that it will meet the requirements to become a CMS-Aligned Network. This significant milestone marks a significant step forward in the alliance's mission to advance a nationwide network that delivers a secure and seamless flow of health information to improve patient care.

The CommonWell Individual Access Services (IAS), the technological backbone behind patient access, is currently available to members and supports Identity Assurance Level 2 (IAL2). This means that patients' identities can be verified securely, ensuring the integrity of the health data being exchanged.

CommonWell's infrastructure has been HITRUST-certified since 2019, further underscoring the alliance's commitment to data security and privacy. The alliance's expertise and leadership are well-aligned with the vision of the CMS Interoperability Framework.

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) invited the CommonWell Health Alliance to support the new national patient access and exchange standards and to take a leadership role in developing the CMS interoperability framework. This invitation recognises the alliance's contributions to the field and its potential to drive meaningful change in healthcare data exchange.

CommonWell has facilitated the exchange of more than 11 billion health care records, enabling the federated exchange of patient information across the nation. This represents more than 261 million unique individuals, making a significant impact on the healthcare industry.

With the CommonWell Health Alliance meeting the requirements to become a CMS-Aligned Network, the future of healthcare data exchange looks promising. The alliance's continued efforts in this field will undoubtedly contribute to improved patient care and outcomes.
