Health crisis in Settimo's hospital: entire ward under lockdown

The Settimo Torinese Hospital's Cavs ward, located on via Santa Cristina, has been placed in quarantine due to a recent scabies outbreak. This outbreak, which occurred in October 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, has affected approximately 80 patients and has been closely monitored by the healthcare provider.

Scabies is a skin disease primarily transmitted through direct and prolonged contact with an infected person. The outbreak at the Cavs ward is believed to have started with a healthcare worker, referred to as "patient zero". The name of this individual has not been publicly disclosed, and specific measures taken by this individual since the outbreak of scabies have not been detailed.

The treatment for the patients in the Cavs ward includes weekly showers with an antiparasitic solution. Additionally, healthcare workers are applying a cream containing permethrin as part of measures to contain the scabies outbreak.

During the October 2020 outbreak, an elderly patient and at least five nurses and healthcare workers were affected. Emergency procedures were implemented, including the transfer of the roommate of the infected patient to another ward, despite showing no symptoms. Another healthcare worker who works the same shift as the infected colleague was transferred to another ward for precautionary measures, despite also showing no symptoms and deciding to take sick leave.

Patient zero has been at home on sick leave for several days and has undergone the prescribed prophylaxis. All affected individuals in the October 2020 outbreak were employees of the cooperative managing the services at the hospital.

Giuseppe Gulino, the hospital's director, confirmed that prophylaxis has been activated for all staff and patients, and a complete sanitization of the environments has been ordered to minimize further infections. The ward will remain in quarantine until the completion of prophylaxis measures and subsequent checks.

It is important to note that scabies is not a serious disease but can be highly contagious, especially in closed communities such as hospitals. The hospital's team is working diligently to contain the outbreak and ensure the safety of all patients and staff.

Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Settimo Torinese Hospital continues to prioritise the health and wellbeing of its patients and staff. The hospital's Cavs ward, although currently in quarantine, remains committed to providing quality care and assistance to its patients.
