Hannover Launches High-Performance CPR Project to Save Lives

Hannover's fire department, emergency doctors, and aid organizations have joined forces to test a new, high-performance cardiopulmonary resuscitation (HP-CPR) procedure. Launched on September 1, 2025, this optimized approach aims to significantly improve resuscitation success and neurological outcomes. The project is set to be evaluated after six months.

HP-CPR is a standardized, team-focused concept that emphasizes immediate bystander resuscitation, clear team collaboration, and precise role distributions. Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire Department, stresses that every second counts in emergencies, and HP-CPR is a scientifically proven lifesaver.

Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of the Rescue Service in Hannover, expects HP-CPR to ensure everyone knows their role, enabling almost continuous chest compressions and smooth integration of complex medical measures. The introduction of HP-CPR involved intensive training, simulation exercises, and modern resuscitation technology.

In HP-CPR deployments, firefighters take over chest compressions, provide necessary equipment, and support patient transport. This allows rescue service personnel to focus on complex medical measures under the guidance of deployed emergency doctors. Initial studies and practical experiences suggest that HP-CPR can significantly enhance resuscitation chances and neurological recovery. Additionally, HP-CPR dispatches an emergency doctor vehicle, an ambulance, and a fire engine staffed with four firefighters, providing more helping hands in the early deployment phase.

Hannover's HP-CPR project is designed to improve resuscitation quality and gain valuable time, with the ultimate goal of significantly enhancing successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery. After six months, an initial evaluation of the project will be conducted to assess its impact and potential for wider implementation.
