Government official, specifically the Health Minister, is a burden to the administration.
In the heart of Portugal, a 28-year-old high-risk pregnant woman found herself giving birth on a public street in Carregado, raising concerns about the country's health system.
The incident, which occurred recently, has sparked criticism from Eurico Brilhante Dias, the Parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party. He has accused Health Minister Ana Paula Martins of being a "dead weight" in the government, citing this case as just one in a series of recent issues.
According to reports, the family called the Health 24 service for assistance, but were advised to go to the hospital by car. The woman eventually gave birth on the sidewalk with the help of her parents, and a nearby nurse and doctor arrived soon after.
Dias pointed out that this case is not an isolated incident. He also mentioned the ongoing strike by INEM technicians and the case of "aircraft means" as other examples of problems within the National Health Service (SNS). He further stated that the Socialist Party's assessment is that the Minister today does not contribute to resolving any problems identified in the SNS.
The Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS) acknowledged a "human error" in the triage of the pregnant woman by the SNS 24 line. The error occurred in the application of the triage algorithm and the referral of the pregnant woman.
The SNS, which provides universal healthcare coverage to all legal residents, including immigrants, with low costs and comprehensive services such as maternity care, has been expanding its workforce. Recent hiring has increased staff levels, reflecting ongoing investment in public health services.
Despite these efforts, challenges such as waiting times and occasional facility limitations persist. However, the SNS is supplemented by a strong private sector, and many expats use private insurance alongside SNS access.
In response to the incident, Eurico Brilhante Dias emphasized that the Prime Minister should have addressed the minister's future in the government. He stressed that the Minister has responsibilities and that the issues in the SNS are not resolved with the General Inspectorate of Health Activities (IGAS), but with concrete political action.
As of the latest reports, the case of the woman who gave birth on the street in Carregado is currently under investigation by the government. No specific information or official statements about repercussions or Minister of Health Ana Paula Martins' response were found in the available search results.
