Government Accuses Ariel García Furfaro of Deadly Fentanyl Trafficking, Argues He Should be Imprisoned, and Warns of Possible Judicial Evasion by Furfaro Against Judge Kreplak
The Ministry of Health in Argentina has potentially averted hundreds of thousands of deaths due to the contaminated fentanyl produced by HLB Pharma, a pharmaceutical company owned by Ariel García Furfaro. The company is currently under investigation for aggravated tax evasion and producing contaminated fentanyl that led to at least 96 deaths nationwide.
The contaminated fentanyl was manufactured by Laboratorios Ramallo, another company owned by García Furfaro, in December 2024. The Argentine drug authority (ANMAT) conducted inspections of Ramallo's production processes between November and December 2024 and found significant critical and major deficiencies related to quality and safety. Despite these findings, the laboratory remained operational until it was shut down in February 2025, following the first reported fentanyl contamination deaths.
The investigation is focusing on a specific fentanyl batch produced by Laboratorios Ramallo S.A., with batch number 31.202, which was produced on December 18, 2024. The Ministry of Health has removed all doses of this contaminated fentanyl from the market, and has recommended that the product 'Propofol HLB, injectable IV emulsion, lot 60000' not be used, commercialized, or distributed.
HLB Pharma is also under investigation for having presented false documentation. No new information about the status of García Furfaro's detention was provided. The opposition in the Chamber of Deputies is still pressing for the creation of an investigative commission on the contaminated fentanyl scandal.
It is worth noting that HLB Pharma was not inspected by ANMAT since February 2020. The Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring that the case progresses and the responsible party is held accountable. If the processing does not advance, Judge Ernesto Kreplak may be recused.
The exclusive manufacturer of HLB Pharma Group S.A. is Laboratorios Ramallo S.A. The Ministry of Health has taken swift action to remove the contaminated fentanyl from the market, and the investigation continues into the production and quality control failures that led to this tragedy.
