Governance Transcends Politics - Taraba State Governor Takes Spiritual Approach for Deputy's Health Concerns

Governor Kefas Urges Prayers for Ailing Deputy in Taraba State

In a historic address, Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State spoke publicly for the first time about the prolonged absence of his deputy, Aminu Alkali, who has been seriously ill since late December 2024.

Alkali, who suffered a stroke that caused weakness on one side of his body and impaired his speech, was initially treated at the National Hospital in Abuja before being transferred to a hospital in Egypt for several months. He returned to Nigeria for continued recuperation in mid-August 2025.

Governor Kefas, addressing the state in a broadcast, urged prayers across Taraba for Alkali’s recovery. He emphasized that leadership in Taraba is about humanity before politics, and in this situation, compassion should lead.

Kefas drew from his military background to recall the spirit of esprit de corps, emphasizing that it means standing together in service without regard to religion, ethnicity, or background. He stated that this spirit should guide the people of Taraba in their support for Alkali and his family.

The governor acknowledged growing concern about the state's lack of an active deputy governor. However, he clarified that Alkali's absence is not a political matter but a human one. He emphasized that laws alone are insufficient without morality and conscience.

For now, Kefas' duty is to care, support, and let compassion lead. He declared that he has no hidden agenda in handling Alkali's situation. If necessary, he will act according to the constitution regarding Alkali's position.

The Taraba Government has declared that there is no vacancy in the deputy governor's office. Despite Alkali's absence, the government continues to monitor his condition closely, balancing support and constitutional governance requirements.

Kefas appealed for unity using both Christian (Galatians 6:2) and Islamic (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:32) scriptures, urging residents to pray for Alkali, who fell ill while on official duty.

It is worth noting that there are no vacancies in the positions of ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) or the Nigeria Police in Taraba State.

In conclusion, Aminu Alkali remains on medical leave and has not resumed official duties. However, he is making progress and is physically back in Taraba State. The people of Taraba are urged to continue praying for his recovery and to show compassion and unity in this challenging time.
