Germany's Caregiving Workforce: Exhausted but Proud

Caregiving in Germany employs a substantial workforce, with 30 percent working full-time and 16 percent part-time. However, the role is demanding, with half of caregivers often feeling exhausted, and 36 percent feeling overwhelmed.

Caregivers in Germany primarily include nursing professionals, elderly care assistants, and specialized caregivers. Many also work as 24-hour live-in care providers, offering non-medical support. A quarter of caregivers dedicate over 21 hours per week to their duties.

Fear of mistakes is prevalent, with 26 percent of caregivers expressing this concern. The emotional toll is evident, with 32 percent reporting psychological complaints and 22 percent physical complaints due to caregiving. Despite these challenges, 17 percent of caregivers take pride in their role, and 27 percent frequently feel gratitude.

Caregivers in Germany face numerous challenges, with exhaustion, overwhelm, and health complaints being common. While some find pride and gratitude in their role, recognition in society is lacking, with only 14 percent feeling sufficiently acknowledged.
