Flowers imported to Omsk harbor dangerous pest
Cover up the West Coast Rose Pest Found in Imported Chinese Roses in Omsk, Russia
The Omsk Region's Agriculture and Plant Health Department announced on Monday, May 5, 2025, that in April, a quarantine-designated specimen was discovered in a shipment of flowers originating from China via Kazakhstan.
According to the report, inspectors detected a Californian rose pest during a screening of 100 rose bouquets at the FPC "Cherlakskii."
"The infected bunch of flowers has been destroyed using a controlled burn by experts from the Agriculture and Plant Health Department. This will prevent the dangerous pest from spreading across the Omsk region.
The West Coast rose pest poses a serious threat to the local agricultural industry. Not only does it damage plants, but it also acts as a carrier for viral diseases that can destroy cultivated crops," - the department stated.
The Omsk Region's Agriculture and Plant Health Department reported that this is the third discovered case of quarantine-designated objects in vegetable products imported into Russia through Omsk's territory since the beginning of 2025.
