First-grade students in Fürth are equipped with reflective lights for enhanced safety during their school commute.
The city and county of Fürth have taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety of its first-graders as they navigate the streets during the new school year. The Traffic Safety Council Fürth, in collaboration with Sparkasse Fürth and Infra Fürth, is distributing small, battery-operated reflective lights called 'Blinkis' for children.
These Blinkis, attached to jackets or school bags, have been shown to significantly increase the visibility of first-graders. Reports indicate that they can be noticed from a much greater distance, potentially providing crucial seconds in traffic. Without reflectors, visibility is approximately 25 meters, but with Blinkis, visibility can be increased up to 140 meters.
Mayor Markus Braun emphasized the importance of these Blinkis, but also highlighted that while they are essential, the behavior of all road users, especially parents, is equally significant. Sparkassen Board Member Kai Tusak echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of children having role models, particularly from their parents.
County Commissioner Bernd Obst advocates for traffic education to start before school enrollment, and practices such as identifying danger spots and getting used to traffic rules are crucial in protecting children. He was present at the symbolic handover of Blinkis, which took place at the primary school in Altenberg, as previously reported.
Infra's Managing Director, Marcus Steurer, reaffirms the importance of ensuring a safe school journey for them as a transport company. He stated that this collaboration continues, with the distribution of Blinkis, as a means to achieve this goal.
It's important to note that the use of Blinkis is not a replacement for responsible behavior from all road users, especially parents. The increased visibility with Blinkis raises the likelihood that car drivers, cyclists, and other road users can react in time, but it's the collective responsibility of everyone to ensure the safety of our young ones.
As many children in Fürth start school for the first time without accompaniment, it's heartening to see initiatives like this one that prioritize their safety. The new school year has begun, and with it, a renewed commitment to making the streets of Fürth a safer place for its youngest citizens.
